According to legend, some San Carlos Apaches were trapped by the cavalry atop the cliffs overlooking what is now the town of Superior. They refused to be taken alive and instead jumped, and so the cliffs got the name of Apache Leap. The obsidian collected around Superior is known as "Apache tears" -- the hardened tears of the Apache women who came to gather their dead.
