... who entered no fewer than FIVE DIFFERENT VERSIONS of "Una Paloma Blanca" | Click any selection on the tape graphic at left, or click any of the corresponding numbers below. First, though, you might want to refresh your memory of how the Slim Man himself sings it. |
(A note on sound quality: the tape is quite distorted; I did the best I could with these .wav files.) |
"Una Paloma Blanca" #1 (172k): A nice mangled country version. Probably the least mangled on the tape. "Una Paloma Blanca" #2 (187k): Kind of a Danielson-ish version. "Una Paloma Blanca" #3 (663k): This one's my favorite. It's got this happily ominous clarinet melody. (Also, you can clearly hear them say, "new moon haze." I love that.) "Una Paloma Blanca" #4 (514k): This one made me think of Bongwater. Except no Ann Magnuson. "Una Paloma Blanca" #5 (335k): Here's one that belonged on the Neil Young tribute CD, The Bridge. Except I don't think Neil Young ever recorded "Una Paloma Blanca." That's probably for the best. |

The winning entry receives a package of detritus from Command Post Deuce, including relics from Whip It! (portions of album covers that once adorned her ill-fated carcass), photos of Wagner, official Cardhouse popsicle stix, past issues of X Magazine and Macros, a hotel key I forgot to turn in to Circus Circus after Burning Man, Psychic Gum wrappers, and whatever else I can fit in there.
In addition, each of the winners receives a 1998 Commemorative "Una Paloma Blanca" Contest refrigerator magnet, handmade by your humble webmaster, each bearing the comforting visage of Slim Wagner. |

Dear Deuce of Clubs,
I found your "Paloma Blanca" site on the internet. Although I am not interested in the contest, I am hoping you might have the lyrics in Spanish to "Paloma Blanca." I am a Spanish teacher who enjoys singing with my classes but I have not been able to locate the Spanish version anywhere. Can you help? |
|
I'm afraid not, Elaine. Anyone who has "Una Paloma Blanca" lyrics en español can submit them to Deuce of Clubs, & I'll pass them along to Elaine. (They don't have to be correct. We're not the teachers around here.)
Update, jun2006: Jennifer to the rescue (see bottom of page). |
And finally,
So who's giggling now, Jill? |

A friend of mine sent out a blast email to his many buddies with the link to
the George Baker video of Una Paloma Blanca and a link to your website. I
got such a kick out of the song since I had learned it in Spanish class so
long ago that I had to find the lyrics. When I saw that there was someone
on your website who was in need of them, I felt compelled to help out! The one on the left is a literal translation. This one on the right is the actual Spanish version that used to be on the radio. De Nada!! El Gusto es Mio'! (no problem the pleasure is mine) |
