Battle of the Bands --

The Monks vs. The Shaggs

Certain similarities being observed between The Shaggs and The Monks, a head-to-head showdown seemed warranted.

As you enjoy these stirring samples of 1960s poesy (thankfully antithetical to what is usually thought of as the spirit of the 1960s), note the similarity of subject matter, the cadences of near-Nordinian antiphonal response, the YEAHs.

In this battle of the bands, call no judge enviable.

Time for Foot-Foot?

Or is it Monk Time?

The Shaggs -- "Shaggs' Own Thing"

Okay girl, now, let's see what YOU can do!
Oh, BABY I feel it now
What? I don't know
But I feel it In my bones

Pardon me, boy
[Pardon me, man]
Was you with my girl last night?
[Yeah, that was me]
On a Saturday night
[Yeah]
In the bright moonlight
[Yeah, that was me, all right]
Yeah, I knew it was

Pardon me, boy
[Pardon me, man]
Was you with my girl last night?
[Yeah, that was me]
On a Saturday night
[It was me, all right]
In the bright moonlight
[Yeah]

I saw YOU
A-huggin and a-kissin her with all of your might
Let me tell ya FELLER, it was a terrible sight
Sneakin out with MY girl
Thinkin she was YOUR girl
And doin it
YEAH doin it!
Huggin and a-kissin her with all of your might
On a Saturday night
In the bright moonlight
[YEAH]

Gonna be a certain party there at her house
[OH, YEAH?]
For a certain little mouse?
That turned into a louse
[WHO'S THAT -- YOU?]
There's gonna be
A certain party there at her house, yeah

A-sneakin with MY girl
Thinkin she was YOUR girl
And doin' it?
YEAAAAAAAAAAH doin it
On a Saturday night
In the bright moonlight
[YEAH, DOIN IT!]

Boy, you wait'll I catch up witchoo
[OH YEAH?]
Yeah
Now let's get in
Ready?
[YEAH]
We'll do it quick
[ALRIGHT]

Pardon me, boy
[Pardon me, man]
Was you with my girl last night?
[Yeah, that was me]
On a Saturday night
[YEAH]
In the bright moonlight
A-holdin her tight
[YEAH THAT WAS ME]

I saw YOU
A-huggin and a-kissin her with all of your might
Let me tell you FELLER
It was a terrible sight
[YEAH]
Sneakin out with my girl
Thinkin she was your girl
And doin it
Yeah doin it
Huggin & a-kissin her with all of your might
On a Saturday night
In the bright moonlight
[YEAH! DOIN IT!]
Yeah

Boy, you had it
[OH YEAH?]
Yeah
[WHAT'RE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT?]
You wait & find out
[I'M WAITIN]
Yeah?
Boy, the next time I'm gonna be out there
And what I'm gonna have in my hand
You ain't never gonna see it
[IS THAT RIGHT?]

The Monks -- "That's My Girl"

[YEAH]
Hey, fella, whatcha doin' with that girl over there?
[YEAH]
Aw, that's a nice girl you got, she sure looks good
[YEAH]
I'll bet you're gonna make love with her, huh? Aren'tcha?
[YEAH]
Aw, that's a NICE girl you've got, awwwwwww,
[YEAH]
I'll bet you ARE gonna make love with her.

[YEAH]
Boy, that's a GOOD-looking girl you got, fella
[YEAH]
Hey, haven't I seen her someplace before?
[YEAH]
Now let me see ... she looks familiar, I, that's, uh...
[YEAH]
Let me see, uh, that's a nice girl ...
[YEAH]
Well, that's ... well, that's ... that's MY girl you've got!

You can't have my girl
That's MY girl
Nobody can have MY girl
She's MY girl
Oh, now you quit that!
No! [YEAH]

Perhaps a draw is permissible, who knows. This I do know: that no one can claim to have lived a full and rewarding life without having heard Robert Wiggin (brother to the Shaggs) say, "Yeahhhh, DOIN' IT!"

Monks? or Shaggs?
