Bombay Beach's trailer community was gradually swallowed up by ice-like salt formations.

As I approached this trailer--and just as I remarked that I'd rather fall through frozen pond ice than into this salty-chemical muck--the ground began to give way underneath me. I was having visions of Lot's wife, but fortunately I sank only a few inches.
